I know that based on the title of this post, many are thinking, "what? who cares". Well, welcome to my blog. This is exactly what you get: what I discover, what I'm thinking about, what I've wrapped my head around today. Work is stressful, family life is chaotic and as I search for sanity and zen-like qualities, I find pleasure in the simple things. Today, it is "Jergens Shea Butter" body lotion.
I usually am a Vaseline Intensive care kind of girl. I like the thick and creamy lotions. I also am a Johnson and Johnson Baby lotion addict, but I only splurge when it is on sale. My husband thinks that there is something incredibly sexy about the baby smell on me. That has probably changed since we have kids and that is what they usually smell like.
Anyhow, I am an African American woman with incredibly dry skin year round. I was raised by a mom who swore by Vaseline. I'm not sure if there was an extensive lotion market in the 70's, but when I was growing up, baths were followed by Vaseline as your only moisturizer. I don't think that I discovered lotion until I was in college and my roommate wondered how I could stand to "grease up" with Vaseline. At that time, I was intrigued by her concoction of J&J baby lotion with baby oil mixed in. Her amber skin always looked great; and she smelled good too.
Inspired by her, I began my ritual of lotion immediately followed by a layer of the Vaseline to "lock in" the moisture. This sequence must be preformed while the skin is still damp to maximize the "lock in". This has been going on for 18 years. It is so much of a part of my life, that "vaseline" is now a verb in my vocabulary, i.e. "I have to vaseline my feet." Each of the kids has a bottle of lotion and a jar of Vaseline in their rooms. I still perform the honors on my 3 year old, but my 5 year old son performs the "ritual" without my help. My husband shakes his head at our slick, glistening bodies after bath/shower time. He has no patience for this and I ignore it when he only lotions my daughter after bath, refusing to apply the necessary "lock in" Vaseline. I'm able to deal by telling myself that I will apply that extra rich layer of Vaseline the next night.
Well, my feelings changed a little after using the Jergens lotion. It is the first lotion that I've ever used that gives the feeling that I have put a little extra "lock in" on after. I couldn't believe it. The bottle says that it is a "skin enriching moisturizer with pure African Shea Butter, a source of antioxidants & vitamins". These folks are on to the something - do the marketing folks know about the kids like me whose well-meaning mothers slathered them down with Vaseline after nightly baths? I guess so. Dare I say that I have given up my layer of Vaseline over my lotion? Yes I have.... well, except for my feet. You have to have Vaseline on your feet at night; I guess that might be a subject of another post.
Hats off to Jergens for making a lotion that cuts "lotioning time" for those of us that were reared to shine like a brand new copper penny after bath. Until next time.....
